What Happens When You Win the Lotto in South Africa?
Winning the lottery is life-changing — but the steps you take in the first 24 hours matter enormously. Here's the complete process for South African lottery winners.
Step 1: Sign your ticket immediately
Before anything else, sign the back of your ticket. This proves ownership. A signed ticket is like cash — whoever holds it can claim the prize.
Step 2: Don't tell anyone (yet)
Ithuba and financial advisors strongly recommend keeping the win private until you've taken professional advice. Public announcements attract scammers, long-lost relatives, and bad financial decisions.
Step 3: Get professional advice
Before claiming, consult: a financial advisor (investments), a tax professional (interest on winnings is taxable), and a lawyer (asset protection, wills). Ithuba provides free financial counselling for jackpot winners.
Claiming process by prize size
- R50,000 or less: Any retailer, immediate payout
- R50,001–R250,000: Ithuba regional office, 5–10 business days
- Over R250,000: Ithuba head office, 10–20 business days
- Jackpot wins: Ithuba head office in Johannesburg, by appointment only
Tax: what you actually keep
Lottery winnings are not subject to income tax in South Africa. However, any interest earned on invested winnings is taxable. For a R50M jackpot, if invested at 8% interest, you'd owe tax on the R4M annual interest — but the R50M itself is tax-free.
