Ithuba reports that roughly 5–10% of all prizes go unclaimed annually. For smaller prizes (R50–R500), the percentage is higher because many players forget to check old tickets. For large prizes, the percentage is lower but the amounts are significant.

After 365 days, unclaimed prizes are returned to the lottery's Good Causes fund, which distributes money to sports, arts, charities, and community development projects across South Africa.
