How Lotto Prize Divisions Work in South Africa
Most South African lottery players only think about the jackpot, but there are 7–9 prize divisions in each game. Understanding the full structure helps you appreciate how often players actually win.
SA Lotto — 8 prize divisions
- Division 1: Match 6 (Jackpot)
- Division 2: Match 5 + Bonus
- Division 3: Match 5
- Division 4: Match 4 + Bonus
- Division 5: Match 4
- Division 6: Match 3 + Bonus
- Division 7: Match 3 (Free R5 Quick Pick)
- Division 8: Match 2 + Bonus (Free Ticket)
PowerBall — 9 prize divisions
PowerBall has an extra division because the PowerBall is drawn from a separate pool. You can win Division 9 just by matching the PowerBall alone — no main numbers needed.
Daily Lotto — 4 divisions
With only 5 numbers and no bonus ball, Daily Lotto has the simplest structure. All four divisions are pari-mutuel — the prize pool is split equally among winners in each tier.
What 'pari-mutuel' means
Unlike fixed-odds games (UK 49s), SA National Lottery games use pari-mutuel jackpots. The prize pool comes from ticket sales. If no one wins the jackpot, it rolls over. The actual payout per winner depends on how many tickets were sold and how many people matched the same numbers.
