Common Lottery Scams in South Africa: How to Protect Yourself
Lottery scams are one of the most common forms of fraud in South Africa. Millions of rands are lost every year by people who believe they've won a prize they never entered.
The fake winner SMS
You receive an SMS: 'Congratulations! You've won R485,000 in the SA National Lottery. Call 0800-XXX-XXXX to claim.' This is always a scam. Ithuba does not notify winners via SMS. You check your ticket; they don't call you.
The WhatsApp 'lottery' message
A message claims you've been selected as a 'lucky winner' in a lottery draw you never entered. They ask for personal details or an 'processing fee' to release your prize. No legitimate lottery requires payment to claim a prize.
Red flags to watch for
- You're told you won a lottery you didn't enter
- They ask for bank details, ID number, or PIN
- They request an 'processing fee', 'tax', or 'admin fee'
- The message comes from a personal number, not an official line
- They create urgency: 'Claim within 24 hours or forfeit'
How to verify
Check your ticket at nationallottery.co.za or any licensed retailer. If you didn't buy a ticket, you can't have won. Ithuba's official number is 0800 484 822. When in doubt, hang up and call them directly.
